Must try harder!

Really? Your hard work and determination will lead to success. And if you fail, you basically didn’t try hard enough. My LinkedIn feed is filled with this kind of crap.

Self-appointed coaching gurus are the worst at this. And they should know better.

Our western society places almost all responsibility for success and failure on the individual. But nobody succeeds or fails on their own. People don’t thrive in isolation (remember Covid?). Many other cultures recognise this – we are all part of a collective and need each other in some way. Despite appearances we fail and succeed together.

Besides, wider systemic forces prevent us from ever being in full control of our destiny. It’s not just the laws of physics, it’s common sense. Most of us know that success has an element of chance. Just as failure is often bad luck (provided we did everything we could).

Sure, we can make our own luck – you can’t score a goal if you don’t shoot – but there are no guarantees. That is the beauty of the journey. We can only do what we can do. To live a life according to our values and do our best.

And that is a form of success regardless of the outcome.

Don’t listen to the gurus, listen to your own wisdom. If you don’t know how, there is probably someone else in your collective who can help you find it – your way.
